We are all stewards of Long Pond, assuring the enjoyment and preservation of this natural resource for generations to come. The Belgrade Lakes region is fortunate to be supported by 7 Lakes Alliance and Belgrade Lakes Association These 2 groups monitor lake quality, sponsor educational sessions and fund actions that safeguard the quality of our lakes. Visit their sites for water quality reports, events, assistance and guidance

Septic Systems can leach phosphates into our lake which foster algal growth. Pumping every 3 years for seasonal homes and every 2 years for year-round or rental properties is a smart investment. Pumping removes scum and sludge that is not broken down by bacteria and prevents both phosphate seepage and ultimately, leach field replacements that can cost tens of thousands of dollars. The return on investment is simple – PUMP. New regulations are imminent, don’t wait to inspect your system to verify that is it functioning properly.
Shoreland residents are encouraged to become LakeSmart Certified and abide by Maine, Rome and self-inspired tenets. Shoreland buffers protect phosphate entry into the lake from runoff. The town of Rome recommends at least 25 ft of buffer along the shore. The Youth Conservation Corp, is available to provide labor for shoreland buffer plantings and other enhancements to the shorefront. Contact them early to get on their project list.

Loons are iconic residents here. They are tagged and counted annually to monitor their migration patterns and the survival of loon chicks. There are various man-made loon nests and natural loon nests scattered around the lake. Everyone is encouraged to stay at lease 100 ft away from nests as loons are skittish parents and will desert their young.
Maine has outlawed the use of lead fishing sinkers and unpainted lead-headed jigs following necropsy of loons and eagles believed to be killed by these toxic items. Please trade in your lead products at the 7 LA offices on 137 Main St, Belgrade Lakes and protect our loons.
